Grants

The Marshall Community Foundation administers more than 80 endowed funds, some of which are restricted to specific purposes in accordance with the donor’s wishes.  The Marshall Community Foundation awards grants from the Unrestricted and Field of Interest Funds four times each year for innovative projects and programs that respond to the community’s changing needs.

Who can apply
The Marshall Community Foundation welcomes and encourages grant applications from non-profit, tax-exempt organizations, schools, churches (for non-sectarian purposes), cities and townships in the greater Marshall Area and Calhoun County that address:

  • Education
  • Arts & Culture
  • Community and Economic Development
  • Environment
  • Health & Wellness
  • Human Services
  • Youth & Seniors

Prospective grant applicants are encouraged to contact the Marshall Community Foundation to discuss their proposal and obtain more information about the grant-making process.  Many applicants find that this session gives them a helpful start in communicating their vision and understanding the Foundation’s role within the community.

Grant-making priorities
In general, highest priority is given to grant applications that meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Represents an innovative, start-up effort.
  • Facilitates cooperation and enhances collaboration among organizations.
  • Avoids duplication of services.
  • Strengthens or improves the organizations self-sufficiency and efficiency.
  • Yields substantial community benefits for the resources invested.
  • Benefits the greatest number of people.
  • Promotes Youth Development.
  • Addresses emerging community needs.

What will not be funded
In order to make the best use of the limited, available funds, the Marshall Community Foundation does not typically grant:

  • Annual fund-raising drives or capital campaigns.
  • Political projects.
  • Religious or sectarian purposes.
  • Individuals, except through educational scholarships.
  • Endowments or debt reductions.
  • Normal operating expenses (except for start-up purposes and/or special needs).
  • Multi-year funding (may consider with favorable first year evaluation).

How to Apply
The process is simple. To receive an application, contact the Foundation Office by calling (269) 781-2273 or mail info@marshallcf.org, or download the application (available in Word or PDF format).  

Submit completed application and requested materials to the Marshall Community Foundation office by the deadline indicated.  Materials must be received by the grant deadline to be considered for the next grant cycle.

The Review Process
Grant proposals are reviewed by the Grant Review Committee comprised of community volunteers and members of the Marshall Community Foundation Board.  Then, the Marshall Community Foundation Board of Trustees reviews the Grant Review Committee recommendations and grant applications to make a final decision.  Youth related grants are also reviewed by the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) which functions as a grant review board, evaluating and making recommendations to the Board of Trustees.  All grant applicants are then notified by mail as to the final grant decision.

Mini-Grant Application
Mini-grant requests cannot exceed $750 and must benefit the residents of the greater Marshall Community.  These grants are intended to be a flexible local funding opportunity that can rapidly respond to community needs.
